Does your child LIV volleyball? Whether they are a newbie or a seasoned player, club volleyball is the perfect next step. It’s a fantastic way for him/her to sharpen their skills, make new friends, and maybe even catch the eye of college recruiters. But with so many clubs out there, how do you choose the right one? Check out these tips to help you make the best choice and find the perfect fit for you!

Do Your Homework

Not all clubs are created equal! Here's how to find the best fit for your athlete:

  1. Know Your Athlete's Needs: Consider their age, skill level, and goals. Do they need solid beginner training, are they at an intermediate level and looking to refine their skills, are they aiming for college play?

  2. Understand the Costs: Club volleyball is a a huge financial investment. Know what the fees cover and ask about travel expenses, uniform costs, payment plans, and scholarships. Additionally, if your athlete is on a competitive 1's team or an elite national level travel team, those families need to consider the added financial (and personal) commitment for extra training.

  3. Learn About Clubs: Visit websites and social media. What's their coaching philosophy? Check out their calendars, events, and coach bios. Ask for parent references and see where their teams travel for tournaments. Will it be ideal for your family's schedule?

  4. Visit the Club: Attend open gym sessions and/or clinics. Get to know the director and coaches.

  5. Teams and Tryouts: Learn about different team levels and the tryout process. Find out if there are spots available for your athlete's age and skill level. Ask about private tryouts if needed. How do they decide on playing time? On competitive teams, usually playing time is earned and the best players see the most court time. On regional or developmental teams, players may get equal playing time. What is the right fit for your athlete and their skill level, development and goals?

  6. Training and Conditioning: Find out how often the teams practice and if additional strength/conditioning sessions are required. Check if private lessons are available.

  7. Check the Philosophy: Does the club focus on athletic skills, or do they also develop life skills like time management and discipline? Look for clubs that emphasize positive qualities like responsibility and teamwork.

  8. Remember the Coaches: Coaches are human and they dedicate a lot of time and energy to your athlete's development. Show them respect and appreciation for their commitment.

By staying informed and making a thoughtful choice, your athlete will enjoy the benefits of an exceptional club season. Here’s to discovering the ideal volleyball club and experiencing a fantastic season!
